FEMALE, FEMININE, WOMANLY, WOMANLIKE, WOMANISH, EFFEMINATE
Female имеет значение 'принадлежащий к женскому полу': female companion 'спутница, попутчица, компаньонка', female guide 'проводница', female servant 'служанка'. Feminine, womanly и womanlike употребляются в значении 'свойственный женщинам, характерный для женщин', причем womanly, в отличие от womanlike, обычно сочетается с существительными, обозначающими положительные черты женского характера. Feminine не содержит указанных ограничений и характеризуется более широкой сочетаемостью: feminine friendship (attention, curiosity), feminine pursuits; womanly grace, womanly tenderness, womanly sympathy, womanly devotion; womanlike capriciousness, womanlike pettiness. Грамматический термин feminine означает 'женский': feminine gender. Womanish и effeminate означают 'свойственный женщине' и употребляются преимущественно для иронической характеристики мужчины: womanish tears, womanish wailing grief, effeminate habits.
